Chile welcome Uruguay to San Carlos de Apoquindo Stadium for their final CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying tie on Wednesday afternoon with kickoff at 02:30.
Chile have made an inconsistent qualifying campaign and continued that last time out when they fell to humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brazil at away on Friday. They have now lost three of their last four qualifying matches, a run that has seen them drop to seventh in the CONMEBOL standings, two points behind Peru in the playoff spot and a point behind the sixth-placed Colombia.
They therefore still a chance of reaching the playoffs, but will need both Peru and Colombia to lose while picking up a victory of their own.
Meanwhile Uruguay extend their winning streak on the bounce in qualifying campaign to three matches with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Peru at home last Friday. The win was crucial for Diego Alonso’s side as it booked them a place in the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year with still a match to go.
Uruguay sit fourth in the South America qualifying table, level on points with third-paced Eduardo and four points above the fifth-placed Peru, meaning that no matter the results on Wednesday Uruguay will play in the World Cup. They have nothing to fight for in this match other than finishing strongly.
