Chelsea’s hunt for more silverware continues as they look to advance to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup when they host Southampton at the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday with kickoff at 21:45.
Chelsea have made an excellent start to the new Premier League campaign as they have just lost one of their opening nine matches, picking up seven wins and a draw to collect 22 points which have left them on top of the Premier League rankings.
The Blues are off a resounding 7-0 win at home against Norwich City on Saturday and as much as Norwich were disappointing, Chelsea were simply irresistible blowing the Canaries away with Mason Mount netting a hat-trick, while Ben Chilwell got a brace and Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James also got their names on the scoresheet.
Thomas Tuchel’s side managed to advance to this stage in the League Cup through a penalty-shoutout success over Aston Villa following a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and will looking to progress to the next round as aim for their sixth EFL Cup title.
The Blues are currently in a perfect form having won all their last four matches across all competitions and will fancy their chances in the Tuesday’s clash having already beaten their opponents 3-1 in the Premier League this season in early October.
Southampton, on the other hand, have made a disappointing start to the campaign having just won one of their opening nine matches while recording five draws and three defeats and currently occupy the 16th spot with just four points outside the relegation zone.
Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side will enter the EFL Cup on the back of a 2-2 draw against Burnley on Saturday and their recent record doesn’t inspire confidence as the Saints have just won one match in normal time in their last eight matches across all competitions, playing out four draws and suffering two defeats.
It will take a miracle for the Saints to advance to the next round in this tournament as they face one of the most formidable defensive units in the continent right now, while they will also be up against a hungry attacking force.
