Both Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers will be looking to return to winning ways when they lock horns at The Valley in an important League One fixture on New Year’s Eve with kickoff at 18:00.
The appointment of Johnie Jackson has proved to be the right decision made by Charlton’s board as he has helped the club to drastically turn around its fortunes. They currently occupy the 12th spot in the league standings with 29 points collected from their 23 matches.
The hosts had their league fixtures against AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham postponed due to the coronavirus and that means that they head into the match off the back of 1-0 defeat to Plymouth at away on the 18th this month with Kieran Agard’s goal right on the 45th minute mark putting an end to Charlton’s four-match winning streak across all competitions.
However, the Addicks are in a good home form this season and are a boasting a seven-match unbeaten run at The Valley, winning six and drawing one in the run and have also won each of their last three league matches at home by a score line of 2-0.
The Addicks having also already claimed points against six of teams currently above them in the table and considering their home form they will fancy to start the New Year with a victory.
Meanwhile promotion-seekers Wycombe Wanderers were unable to extend their unbeaten run to six matches as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at away against Ipswich on Wednesday night. A 44th-minute goal from James Norwood was enough to condemn Wycombe to their fifth defeat of the season, in a game that their manager Gareth Ainsworth was forced to miss after testing positive for Covid-19.
However, Wycombe have been impressive this season as they have bagged 12 victories and six draws from their remaining 18 matches to collect 42 points which have them occupying the sixth spot with just five points outside the top-two spots.
Therefore, a positive result in this match could see the Chairboys climb up to fourth in the table with just two points off the summit putting more pressure on the clash. Although, Wycombe have lost each of their last three visits to The Valley, conceding eight goals in the run, but were able to beat Charlton 2-1 on home soil back in September and they will look to build on that as they aim at keeping their promotion hopes alive.
