Canada and Mexico desire to take a step closer to their dream qualifiction for World Cup 2022 in Qatar when they go into an encounter in a crucial CONCACAF Qualifying clash at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium in Canada on Tuesday.
The hosts remain as the only unbeaten side left in the group heading into the midweek qualifier, while the visitors come into this game on the back of their first defeat of the campaign on Friday evening.
Canada find themselves on the third spot in the automatic qualification heading into their clash with Mexico this week, firmly eying on qualification for only their secon-ever World Cup appearance.
Participating in the competition in Qatar in 2022 would provide Les Rouges with the ideal experience and warmup for their co-hosting of football’s global tournament in 2026, in what is quickly labeled as their ‘golden generation’ of soccer talent in the North American country.
Head coach John Herdman has been the man in charge and has overseen a rise to 48th in the latest FIFA world rankings as a result of their recent success.
With the help of Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies and Tajon Buchanan, Herdman has led the Canadians to three wins and four draws halfway of the stage of the Octagonal CONCACAF qualifying group, with back-to-back victories over Panama and Costa Rica proving vital.
Having conceded only four goals from the opening seven fixtures, the Canadians boast the joint-best defensive record in the CONCACAF group, which has quickly seen them become a frustrating opponent to compete with in qualifying.
Meanwhile, Mexico are travelling to Canada on the back of their first defeat in qualifying, after suffering a 2-0 loss to USA in Cincinnati on Friday.
Depending on Panama’s result against El Salvador, Mexico could drop to fourth position – a playoff qualification spot rather than an automatic position – if they lose to Canada.

Canada news
Herdman is likely going to maintain an unchanged lineup in what has been a settled team for much of the qualification campaign so far. Atiba Hutchinson is likely going to be benched, but the Besiktas midfielder will become Canada’s record appearance holder should he play a part.
Mexico news
Mexico will welcome back central defender Nestor Araujo, as fellow defender Hector Moreno will not be part of the squad on Tuesday. Raul Jimenez should continue to lead the line despite a disappointing performance last time, with Rogelio Funes Mori remains benched.
Prediction and Odds
Canada will be backed by a huge crowd of supporters in Edmonton, and it will be difficult for them to fall to their forst defeat of the qualification campaign just yet. There was very liitle between the two teams when they last met in October and a draw is likely possible.
