Both Burnley and Tottenham will be looking to build on their thrilling victories when they lock horns at Turf Moore in an important Premier league fixture on Wednesday night with kickoff at 23:00.
Tottenham Hotspur had hit their first slump in the Premier League under Antonio Conte following a fine start to his tenure at Tottenham helm. Since claiming a 3-2 victory against Leicester, Conte’s side strung together three consecutive defeats to Chelsea, Brighton and Wolverhampton.
However, the Lilywhites ended the slump in style as they stunned the champions and league leaders Manchester City at Etihad with Harry Kane showing his admirers exactly what they are missing out on, as he produced his finest performance of the season to propel the capital club to a dramatic 3-2 win. After Riyad Mahrez’s penalty in the in the 92nd minute everyone expected it to end 2-2 or the champions to find a way to make it 3-2 , but it was Harry Kane who found himself at the right place at the right time to head home in the 95th minute to blow open the title race.
The win saw Tottenham keep their top-four ambitions alive as they now sit five points behind the fourth-placed Manchester United with three games in hand. This is their first in-hand game and they will need to maximally claim the points in these matches to break into the top four.
Meanwhile Burnley were inspired by their new 6ft 5in talisman Wout Weghorst to storm to a 3-0 victory against Brighton in their previous Premier League fixture on the South Coast on Saturday. Weghorst opened his Burnley account with a powerful drive in the 21st minute before setting up Josh Brownhill for the second goal for Clarets and veteran Aaron Lennon put the game to bed in the 69th minute.
The win was crucial for Burnley in the relegation dugout as it saw them move off the foot of the table leapfrogging Norwich City to the 19th place and are now just five points adrift of safety with two matches in hand. The win also ended Burnley’s 12-match winless run in all competitions and its timing couldn’t come at any better time, as Sean Dyche’s men needed a confidence boost ahead of the clash against Tottenham.
Dyche will hope his side can build on the impressive victory as they look to salvage their season, although they face a side just as desperate for the three points as they are but for a different reason, making this a very close encounter that could see minimal goals.
