Round six of the Championship begins on Friday with Birmingham City welcoming Derby County St Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium for this mouthwatering fixture with kickoff at 22:00.
Both sides head into the match off the backs of a defeat and a draw with Birmingham failing to return to winning ways as they played out a 1-1 draw against Barnsley last time out, while Derby County were also held to 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest.
The draws followed disappointing second-round exits from the EFL cup for both sides as Birmingham City suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham on August 24 whereas Wayne Rooney’s Derby were dumped out of the EFL Cup with a 2-1 defeat by Sheffield United on the same day.
With three wins from their last five Championship matches, Birmingham are currently eighth in league standings with eight points, and a win on Friday will see them break into the third position in the standings.
Lee Bowyer’s side have been struggling in the past few years and emerging as contenders for promotion would be a massive bonus for his side that are now among the teams who have the potential to feature in the playoffs. Hence the three points on Friday will be crucial for Lee Bowyer’s side whose last home win against Derby County came in 2013.
Meanwhile Derby County were number 21 in the table with three points a year ago, now they are in the 15th position with six points in the championship standings which leaves Wayne Rooney as another manager who can be satisfied with his team’s work throughout August.
Rooney’s main target for his side will be to stay out of the relegation zone this campaign hence making the three points on Friday crucial for this side and a win will also see the Rams move ahead of the Blues despite being seven places apart.
