Palmeiras will be looking to extend their Brasileiro Sere A lead when they travel to Estadio da Ressacada to take on 11th-placed Avai in their league round 14 tie on Sunday night.
Avai have made an inconsistent campaign so far in Brasileiro Serie A with the side recording five victories, two draws and six defeats in their 13 games, and now sit 11th in the standings on 17 points, three points above the relegation zone and one point behind sixth-placed Fluminense.
They are coming off a 2-0 away defeat to Fluminense last Sunday. The defeat ended their back-to-back victories in the league and will be looking to bounce back on Sunday as they seek to avoid being dragged near or into relegation zone. A win will help them climb further up the table and could leave them as high as sixth.
However, Eduardo Barroca’s side are up against the current league leaders Palmeiras, who have recorded a strong campaign so far, having only suffered one defeat from their 13 Brazilian top-flight games. They have picked up eight wins and four draws in the run, collecting 28 points which have them sitting three points in the clear of second-placed Corinthians.
However, Palmeiras head into the match off a disappointing and narrow 1-0 defeat to Sao Paulo in the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil at away last week. Prior to that, Abel Ferreira’s side had won all their last four top-flight games and they will be looking to put the defeat behind them and continue their strong form in the league.
Having won four of their last five games against Avai, Palmeiras should fancy their chances heading into the clash.
