Atletico Mineiro vs Flamengo Match Analysis and Prediction

Atletico Mineiro and Flamengo will have an encounter for the second time in less than a week, as the first leg of their round of 16 Copa do Brasil tie takes place on Wednesday at Minerao.

Having already claiming two trophies in 2022, capturing the Supercopa do Brasil and the Campeonato Mineiro, Atletico Mineiro are hungry for more as they face their first actual test in this year’s tournament.

Antonio Mohamed saw his side create another determined defensive showcase over the weekend, picking up a second successive clean sheet.

In their run to the Copa do Brasil title a year ago, Mineiro did not lose a game at home in the entire competition and conceded just once at Minerao.

Alvinegro are by no means the most prominent at maintaining possession for long stretches, although they move the ball quickly into dangerous attacking areas and are among the best teams in Brazil when it comes to progressive passing.

Dorival Junior has started to realise that turning around the fortunes of this once-dominant Brazilian club will be a challenge early into his tenure as Flamengo manager.

His first three matches in charge have been less convincing, losing to Internacional and Atletico Mineiro, with a 2-0 win over Cuiaba in between those defeats.

It was a tale of two halves in both of their encounters in their third round tie, trailing 1-0 to Altos back in May before scoring twice in the second half to win 2-1 and scoring another two in the second period at home 10 days later to secure a 2-0 victory.

Under the former manager Paulo Sousa, they seemed to lack identity as he would constantly change formations and tactis if things did not go smoothly.
