Atletico Mineiro return to Brasileiro action on Monday after three successive cup matches, seeking to continue their good start to the domestic campaign.
The visitors travel to the Estadio Raimundo Sampaio this weekend, looking to bounce back after consecutive defeats which has left the sitting 10th in the league.
Atletico Mineiro were defeated in the Copa Libertadores for the first time this season last time out, going down to a 2-1 loss against Colombian side Tolima, with Steven Lucumi scoring the 92nd-minute winner.
However, Antonio Mohamed’s side can put that result behind them straight away as they already qualified for the knockout stages of that competition, winning Group D on goal difference and with focus now turning back to the league.
Mineiro have not had a game in the Brasileiro since 14 May, when an own goal, when an own goal from Marlon Freitas and a second-half goal from Hulk earned them a 2-0 win against Atletico Goianiense.
Alvinegro have a two point gap to the summit, meaning that a victory on Monday could potentially lift them to the top of the division, but a defeat could see Mineiro drop to mid table.
Meanwhile, Avai are not aiming as high having just earned promotion back to the top flight after two seasons in the second division, with survival the main aim for them.
They have made a good start to the season, picking up 10 points from their first seven matches, but they do need to quickly end their current losing run to avoid a serious knock in confidence.
Eduardo Barroca’s side have not managed to win on their travels yet this year, only scoring once in their three matches away from home also, which means that Monday’s game may prove to be as difficult as the match looks on paper.
