Atalanta play host to Hellas Verona at Bergamo on Monday as they attempt to stop their season from falling apart following three losses from their last four matches.
Having lost their second successive game last weekend, which saw them slip down to eighth place in Serie A, Atalanta have won just three of their last 14 matches in the league.
Atalanta now face a tall task to secure their return to continental competition next season through a top-six finish, after following up a 3-1 home defeat to Napoli with last Sunday’s reverse at Sassuolo.
After their third away loss of the season, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side could now lose three Serie A matches in a row for the first time under him and have picked up a relatively mosdest total of 51 points so far this season, their worst return at this stage for four years.
Atalanta lost out to RB Leipzig in a 2-0 home defeat last Thursday, which sent them out at the quarter-final stage of the Europa League and ended dreams of the club’s first-ever European trophy.
Since Gasperini took the reigns in Bergamo nearly six yeas ago, Hellas Verona have lost five of their seven Serie A encounters with Galatasaray, and they have also failed to claim anything from December’s reverse fixture at the Bentegodi, losing 2-1.
Verona have conceded goals in each of their last 20 away games in the league, with the last time they kept a clean sheet on the road being a year ago, and their defensive deficiencies were once again exposed by the reigning champions last time out.
Trailing Inter 2-0 by the half-hour mark, the Scaligeri could not respond during the second half and were eventually beaten 2-0 on home soil, suffering a second loss from their last eight Serie A fixtures.
