Two teams will be getting back to action in the EFL Cup on Thursday when Arsenal will host Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
The two teams played out a goalless draw last week in the first leg, and the tie is now nicely composed with both sides looking for a place in the final against Chelsea.
Mikel Arteta’s 10 men showed a resilient performance at Anfield in the first leg to ensure they held on for the draw, leaving the second leg with all to play for on their home turf on Thursday.
Arsenal’s coronavirus troubles have since worsened while Arteta is also dealing with injuries, suspensions and AFCON absentees, which led to postponement of the North London derby at the Gunners’ request.
It remains unclear whether their second-leg tie with Liverpool is to go aheadas scheduled, but Arteta and his remaining available players will continue to prepare for the contest.
While Arsenal have never lost any home fixture in the EFL Cup against Liverpool, they have won just one of their last 17 encounters against the Reds in all competitions, and have failed to score in their last four in succession.
After picking up just two points in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Chelsea, Liverpool returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday.
Liverpool have been known over the years for their successes in both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, and despite that, Klopp is yet to win either as a manager, so he will be kken to add at least one of these silverware to his name this season.
With their hopes of securing another Premier League title this season seemingly out of reach, advancing to the first cup final of 2022 would be welcome by the Reds’ supporters.
