Sitting on the upper echelons of the Serie A table ahead of the fifth round of fixtures, Atalanta BC will be looking to extend their impressive run of results when they make the short trip to AC Monza on Monday.
While the visitors’ latest win helped them move onto 10 points from four matches, their fellow Lombrady side remain without a point since ptomotion through the Serie B playoffs.
As they only earned promotion to the top flight for the first time just a few months ago, Monza’s league meetings with Atalanta have all been in Serie B, and their only win came back in October 1999, the sides’ most recent encounter at Stadio Brianteo.
It has not been an easy settling-in period for Giovanni Stroppa’s side so far, as they have lost each and every one of their first four matches in the top flight, after a 3-0 defeat at Roma on Tuesday.
The Biancorossi are sitted at the foot of the standings amid a tricky run of fixtures, which sees them follow trips to Naples and the capital with Atalanta’s arrival at the Brianteo, and they are set to host Juventus in mid-Sepetember.
Hosting Torino at the Gewiss Stadium for their latest game on Thursday, Atalanta had already won two of their first three Serie A matches and drawn 1-1 with AC Milan in the other.
Having endured a disappointing first half of 2022, Atalanta failed to book a spot in European competition, something which had become seen as a formality during recent years of unprecedented success, but a lack of midweek fixtures may eventually work in their favour as Gian Piero Gasperini attempts to rebuild.
The Nerazzurri could now keep a clean sheet in their first three away matches of a Serie A season for the first time in the club’s history.
