Manchester United will be looking to make back to back wins at the start of their 2021-22 premier League Campaign when they lock horns with Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday with kick-off at 16:00.
Southampton opened their 10th straight season in the English top tier with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Rafa Benitez’s Everton last weekend at Goodison Park. This is worrying and rises more concerns from the club’s supporters as the Saints have been struggling in their recent seasons as they finished 17th, 16th and 15th in three of their last four campaigns and they have lost a couple of extremely important players in the summer transfer. Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard two vital players for the club have lest for Aston Villa and Leicester City respectively.
However, the money has been spent on the likes of Adam Armstrong, who scored the consolation goal in the season opener, and Romain Perraud.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side head into the match in poor Premier League form as they have lost three of their last league matches stretching back to last season and have only won two of their last six matches across all competitions. However, the Saints infamously lost 9-0 To Manchester United last season at St Mary’s and the Sunday’s clash provides them a chance to revenge on Ole Gunnar’s side as they aim to record their first win of the season.
Meanwhile Manchester United made-known their desire to dethrone Manchester City as Champions with a stunning start to their 2021-22 Premier League campaign as the beat Leeds United with a trashing 5-1 defeat last Saturday.
Ole Solskjaer’s side displayed they attacking talents with Bruno Fernandes scoring three goals while Mason Greenwood and Fred also got on the scoresheet. However, Paul Pogba was the man of the match after displaying a brilliant performance with four assists to his name. Jadon Sancho made his debut while Varane was announced ahead of the Leeds match and is expected to make his debut this weekend.
Manchester United will now be in high spirits when they travel to St Mary’s where they will fancy their chances here since during the last 24 meetings with the Saints playing at home, Manchester united have won 14 times while Southampton have only won five times and there have been five draws with a goal difference of 48-31 in favor of Manchester United. Also, Southampton’s last home win against Manchester united was back in 2003.
