01/01/2024 11:00 pm
Liverpool will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League standings when they host Newcastle United at Anfield in the New Year’s Day on Monday night.
The hosts are currently two sitting atop on 42 points after 19 matches, two points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, while the Magpies are down in ninth position on 29 points through 19 games.
Liverpool were able to leapfrog the Gunners to the summit after claiming a 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor in their last league match, extending their unbeaten run to 12 games.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in home Premier League matches this season with seven wins and two draws from nine games at Anfield.
The Reds will be looking to extend their 21-game home unbeaten streak dating back to November 2022 against Southampton.
Newcastle’s latest attempt to return to winning ways in the league failed as they suffered a 3-1 comeback defeat to Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Boxing Day, after squandering a one-goal lead.
Eddie Howe’s side will seek to address a poor run of results away from St James’ Park this season with two draws, six losses and just one win in league away matches.
The Magpies currently find themselves on a six-game away winless run, as they have not earned a win on the road since September 24 against Sheffield United.
