Making a swift return to Premier League territory, Championship pace-setters Leicester City face Liverpool at Anfield in Wednesday’s EFL Cup third-round tie.
While the Reds have not had to concern themselves with the competition just yet, Leicester have already eliminated Burton Albion and Tranmere Rovers, winning 2-0 on both occasions to book a trip to Merseyside.
Following back-to-back 3-1 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and LASK Linz in the Premier League and Europa League respectively, Liverpool beat West Ham United at home by the same scoreline, but unlike several times already this season, the Reds did not have to come from behind to prevail.
With both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur dropping points in the North London derby, the red-hot Liverpool capitalised to rise up to second in the Premier League standings, only two points behind Manchester City.
By beating West Ham, Liverpool extended their winning run across all competitions to six matches, while their unbeaten record in competitive matches stands at 18 games since a 4-1 Etihad humbling at the start of April.
The nine-time EFL Cup winners have also won each of their last four third-round ties in the competition, but the defence of their 2022 crown came to a premature end against Manchester City in the fourth round nine months ago.
Leicester’s second-last Premier League home game in 2022-23 was a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, which came an unlucky 13 days before the Foxes were officially relegated from the top flight.
However, with Enzo Maresca now in the dugout, Leicester have already assumed position at the front of the promotion-chasing pack, collecting 21 points from 24 on offer in the 2023-24 Championship so far to cement their place at the top of the standings.
Leicester were beaten for the first time this season just before the international break – losing 1-0 at home to Hull City – but the fortnight’s recuperation worked wonders for the Foxes, who have responded with three successive victories over Southampton, Norwich City and most recently Bristol City.

Liverpool Team News
Jurgen Klopp’s only two known concerns relate to Trent Alexander-Arnold (hamstring) and Thiago Alcantara (hip), the former of whom may have a slim chance of forcing his way into contention here.
Ryan Gravenberch, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Ben Doak could start in an XI similar to that of their continental starting lineup.
